i think the 'Dont eat carrots' and 'Quoteable Quotes' should be moved to the Fun OOC thread.

i also suggest we delete the 'Complaint Corner' and consider it replaced by the 'Suggestion Box'

Same basic idea, just with a more positive taste :D

A member earlier today suggested that we have a meeting to discuss Roleplay. Especially to share how we handle talking about things like buffs and game mechanics IC. And to solve the questionable things.... like is a "ding" IC? Personally i call it a "promotion" but they felt "Ding" was just a Ka slang for promotion.

He felt it would really help newcomers who are taking their first RP experience, as well as freshen up the old-timers =)

Name witheld unless he asks it to be printed =)

Sounds good to me. All we need to do is to find a good time for it.

Maybe... an hour before the regular meeting time?
That way maybe we would start the actual meeting on time, ehehehe!

I agree with everything in Mochy's post....

I have fallen into the category of not moderating Cookie as often as I should.

The main problem with that... I think is alot of us who do RP in AO -keeping Ooc chat to occasional (( )) or in tells -
Quote:
am not saying people are not doing their job. There are no jobs. We all do this for fun and relaxation. Still, if the SoS is going to be the unique alternative I feel it is, even now, we need to support those who try, and guide those who fail... maybe with a bit more zeal

I think that is exactly true. Some of us feel that perhaps not everyone that joins are entirely clear on what an RP org means, what is expected of them when they choose to log in with that character.

Since when did a large roster matter over the quality of the players we have behind the names that log on?.... Im tired of hearing about RL things. I deal with RL things ever RL day of my RL life.. as Im sure everyone else does. There has been a time or two when I've tried to enforce the use of (( {{ 0r [[ and recieved at least 5 or 6 new members all jump on the bandwagon about why is it such a big deal and this that and the other thing. If Im the only one that is being annoyed or effected negatively by it, I just opt to turn it off...
Granted not the right thing to do.. or the best thing to do, and certainly the least helpful thing but at the time it works for me better then just logging all together.

Another I keep hearing about is "lame" RP...

We definately need to work on some sort of Statement maybe get a webpage, like Roux had generously hosted for some time but we never took advantage of the space there...

We need to define the SoS in a RP category. I know the term RP org is used loosely with numerous orgs. Ive been in quite a few of them with other characters. The SOS is the ONLY org that , when I had first joined OOC chat in guild channel was seriously frowned upon., Now its almost the norm.

I would categorize us as a "Free Form IC Roleplay Org" meaning that we don't have to have "structured" roleplay like many pen and paper players are used to doing. We don't have to assign bad guys or create scenerios to be roleplaying. Im not a GM or DM..I never have been, since Ive started roleplaying Ive always taken the " Im a better actor then Director" standpoint. I just leave myself behind (as much as I can) and become the character Ive created when I log into AO... Im not a wife or mother when I log into AO. Im my character...there are even times when I try out my new shade and I get into her so much when she's killing I feel myself snarl when she goes infor the kill...and would LOVE an emote like a neck rip or something like that for the shade's being vampires by nature when reached a level of maturity I think it would be cool..anyway.....

I think this is something important that needs to be addressed... Ive mentioned and idea about a council program for members to be able to talk to designated people in the org about whatever... also a RP workshop or even focus group.. something.

Ive Seen alot of OOC complaints and even heard OOC complaints about other games ruining orgs, taking people from AO. Well sure the SoS roster went from 300 something to under 100... but they were inactive anyway and just almost like inflating us to be something we never were.
Inspite of the other games that have come out, the SOS is a decent size org that hasn't dwindled down into such low numbers that the idea of disbanding has come up.

Hopefully we can get some sort of ROLEPLAYING priority in order and stress it . If people don't like, like Mochy said, there are more then enough orgs that would welcome another body into their midst.
RP-exclusively makes us different. Lets stay that way.

Im sure there is more to be added but Im going to be late for other RL things I need to tend to..

*does the happy dance for Ladies night*

*takes notes on Gwen's points*

i don't know how i went so long without reading this o.O

But, well said. i agree with quality over quantity *smiles*

And about the new webspace. Yes i agree it is a must. Besides i love the Mag, and still want to make a Calendar.... ooohh could i make it Downloadable??? Can you imagine a bunch of people using SoS Calendars in their PC =)

Anyhow. This is what i think.
The host must be someone who isnt leaving, like ever. LOL
i am happy to buy the space myself, and then let our super skilled members make it all cool. i literally have a list of members of the Org that have mad skills with this kind of stuff.
Any suggestions of where i should check?
And what am i looking for exactly, a domain name?
LOL, i am the pc newb

On the topic of role-playing, I would like to offer this up to you all as food for thought. Roleplaying seems to be very much a subjective term. For example, I myself have tried to spend more time with suue IC than OOC. The idea and promise of others being the same way is what had brought me to SoS as an applicant in the begining.

I was quickly suprised to find that when I attempted to play my Omni-Tek minded persona, in an Omni-Tek guild, that I was repeatedly pulled to the side and told how (and these are real quotes) " I didn't belong in SoS" and that " I really need to change the way I think if I ever expect to fit in".

To me personally, role-playing is all about playing the charector as an actor on the backdrop provided by the game-master... in this case, funcom. Had I known initially this, I wouldn't have had the expectations that I did in the time I spent in SoS.

Perhaps a clear definition of what role-playing is to the existing members of SoS should be clearly laid out for future applicants so they can avoid the same resentment I feel towards a good many of you today.

Not that I don't believe this was ever said. I just can't believe that someone or a few people can speak for everyone else. Im sorry for that. I've always enjoyed being around the character Suue, or any other person who takes their character to a level where they feel they have to perfect flaws...if that makes any sence. A character that you want to be around cause you never know what will come out of their mouth next, or someone you may have to be on alert around. Be it for your own comfort or to make sure they don't do something that is not "PC" on Rubi-ka.

I think perhaps since the SoS is more or less a neutral minded Omni Tek guild, people just assume that everyone should be in a constant "love fest", perhaps its just easier to assume that everyone is faction blind when they join the SoS. Which that is not the case. There is a reason for the factions. A reason behind why some of us are alright with people of other factions, or not.
There is a whole history of time in past tense which makes our characters who we choose them to be at creation, then we submerse ourselves into the world of Rubi-ka and make friends...maybe even enemies (though thats rare nowadays) and from learning we can either allow our characters to grow or not. To remain pluged into propaganda or unplug (take the red pill or the blue pill - sorry just watched the Matrix)

I don't think any of us are Roleplaying Gods... hence nobody has the right to tell someone they don't belong. I know Damn sure that person wasn't speaking for me OR my character.

i am also shocked to see your "quotes", and wonder who would have said something like that.. i cant imagine.

Yes, we are a neutral-minded Org. And no our purpose is not to fight in tower-wars. If your character is a Clan-hating hardcore OT personell who perpetuates OT propaganda and looks forwars to blasint some towers... there are better Orgs for you, more in line with your persona.

Last time i spoke to Suue he was asking if we allow members to temp-leave to participate in a Tower attack, since that is commonly allowed for alien raids.

Since i had never heard this topic before i told him i would make a post, with a vote and collect some member feedback. And i did.

But Suue left the Org that same day, so i never contacted him to tell the results of the vote. But i did what i could to please him. Sorry it didnt work out.

Yes, strange story. My opinion is that those quotes were told by one of our new members, unaware of the org politics and philosophy. Suue should mention who he is ressenting, since his post is like a global accusation.

What the org is all about is everywhere in the forums: Respect, Tolerance, Fun. This motto applies IC and OOC. OOC, we dont tell people HOW they should RP, they are free. IC, We invite people who didnt "fit in" on purpose, in order to oppose different points of view, to grow together.

Consider Chirnovnik who was a clan torturer and hater. Consider that guy (I dont remember his name) who insulted others in char constantly, really pushy. Consider Gunney, who talks with such an accent, yet with such talent. Our members always were welcomed to roleplay as they liked. If someone criticizes them, then that someone is wrong.

Now I have seen people leaving for more reasons than I could remember. Good luck Suue, I have this feeling that you simply didnt insist enough, or simply were not in char enough. Those quotes you mention could well be some roleplay, from people who didnt mean to drive you away.

I agree that I am shocked to hear of such statements coming from anyone in SoS - but I know that every tree has a few bad apples.

I also agree, that now that I've talked to Suue a little more, that maybe somewhere else will benefit him more, but I'm sad to see him go.

However, I don't agree that Suue's Player should have posted names in this forum. After all April - our Motto is Respect, Tolerance, Fun - as you mentioned.

With a topic this hot, all name calling is going to do is to start a fight, 'he/she did it'. 'No I didn't!' 'Yes you did!' 'Prove it!'

And there you have it. That isn't fun at all - and when it's a new member's word against someone old and established (not saying it is) there is alot of potential for grief. Since chat logs are so easy to forge/alter and not many keep them anyway - there is no way to prove who did say what.

I think Suue's Player took the respectful path - that isn't going to turn this thread into a barrel of hate and flaming.

Now - names in a private message to one of the Generals? That's more acceptable I think.

These are just my two cents. I'm sure that there were more reasons than we see (and that he has posted) for Suue leaving us - so I will simply take this moment to say:

"Suue's Player - if you're reading this, I wish you the best of luck whereever you go, and hope you still stop by from time to time, because I enjoy Suue's company very much."

hehe same here. Suue was always IC in my opinion =)

And i agree with Renzi. Good luck wherever you take Suue, and perhaps someday you will have a char that you would enjoy having in the SoS. You are always welcome here, and welcome to !join Cookiebot as well {if she is working, lol}.

I am not sure if this goes in the right place here.. but it's a suggestion.. sorta:

Bubba from "Cookie finds the web":
Quote:
A large amount of fiddling with a broken and poorly written script (ie: 90% rewrite), and now Cookie can communicate via the web:

Who's currently online?
Who's currently offline?
What's everybody up to?
What the heck do those folks look like (everyone all at once)?

I would like this excellent piece of work added to the website as links, or maybe a single link: "member status” or something. While I am at it, maybe a more prominent placing for the link to the forums? Rynns, if you please :) ..and thanks again for the great new site.

I only just noticed this thread, so I think the names of the guilty have been edited out now, so I don't know, and nor do I wish to. God Suue, really sorry you had so much grief.

I have my own concerns about the RP, this could all turn into a horrible can of worms, but I think you all know me well enough now to take what I say here the way I intend it to be taken.

Whereas I agree mostly with what you're all saying Gwen, I feel the lack of RP in org chat is a result of well, no RP chat in org channel from the people who've been members for sometime. Most of the RP chat I've been part of within SoS has, no correction, ALL of the RP chat I've experienced in SoS has been in vicinity. There is rarely any hook given in org chat for anyone to RP off.

I'm probably not making sense, so I'll give you my situation. I have pretty much given up staying IC at all around some characters, and I'm not talking about new members either (I'm one myself). Also, I've stopped pretty much thinking about my character because of it in an IC sense, because I don't RP, I'm having trouble working out Athans reactions. That is bad, that is also entirely my problem, I will sort it out.

There is little depth, little frisson, nothing other than simple 'time passing, we nod'. This is ok, most RL conversations tend to be like that after all. However, trying to develop your own character beyond small talk exchanges is kinda impossible, and probably always will be in org chat tbh. This I think is down to the 'love fest' quote earlier up, this is a really large issue to the way RP goes here. It's a pressure on anyone trying to RP something beyond simple small talk. This org is a 'love fest', unfortunately. I myself would be a bit partial to being unpleasant to ooh.. at least one character in the org
 But the pressure, the imagined 'love fest' holds me back because I fear it wouldn't be taken as being IC. Does that make sense ?

Also challenging Suue in a passive aggresive way is a deeply crap thing to do. Make your minds up, leaving for tower wars is ok, but as a neutral org you would probably be better off playing your character somewhere else? There are too many mixed messages here for anyone to cut through. Personally I would be happy if the rule was 'tower wars ? NO.' At least it would be consistent. 'Intolerance of some individuals, little bit of an 'issue' ?, excellant, bring it on, lets get it going. Intolerance of specific factions ? NO.' You cannot have an org with the policy this org has and have clan haters, it just makes absolutely no sense and undermines any RP. It is very, very, hard for people to RP in a liberal organisation. Particualrly one that values tolerance to the point that it tolerates factional intolerance. Yes, yes, I know its possible, but you have to appreciate how bloody hard that is. Because, to RP having a clan hater within the org, with the policy we have, insists that the other characters must RP to have them kicked from the org. Unless your character is so fluffy it refuses to get bothered by anyones opinions, but playing that sort of role is completely beyond my ken, someone would have to explain to me how that could ever be a rewarding experience ;).

The idea of a meeting to discuss 'how to RP' is completely hideous. Oh my god, I've experienced those before, and they always, always end in tears. If it doesnt, it will in my opinion just build ivory towers around certain players styles, which will end in tears further down the road. If you have the meeting, I will definitely not be attending, I'm happy at the moment, and dont want to spoil it. RP orgs can't be a completely broad churches, 'quality not quantity' indeed. So sort it out generals. Set parameters that can cause enough friction, and internal group forming to make RP possible within the org channel. Even, perhaps, creating RP events other than parties, spin some non org alts to come and bug org members even, you know what I mean ?

All we can say is lets all try to be IC more, and see what develops out of it. Talking styles, deciding what can/cannot be said in () or outside of brackets, worrying. Pulling up a player for ooc in org chat without () when a tiny piece of imagination could maybe make it IC to your perception is bad. Older org members talking about their kit, their DPS, or damage bot, not a good example is it ;). You reap what you sow in RP. If we sow enough we'll enjoy RP, and wont have to wait for the next party to roll around. Its hard to RP with people you barely ever see too.

EEK! I got going a bit there heh.

Damn it! forgot to log in. The above post was broadcast by me.. And I've broken a personal rule about role playing. Never ever talk about role playing. Shit. well, its done now. Please remember, I, being Stray (the bloke behind Athan) am happy. I can work/play within the org the way things are, and can adapt if it changes.
